who am i?

Picture

Jennifer Manganello, Ph.D., M.P.H.

I am a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, an aunt, a niece, a cousin, a friend, a wife, and a mom to two boys (one who has disabilities). In many of these roles I have had to find health information, figure out health insurance issues, fill out medical forms, and go to doctor appointments. Some of these things can be very hard to do! I also have to take care of my own health.

I also have a full-time job as a public health professor, and in that role I think about health communication. This includes topics related to how media, technology, and different
forms of communication can influence health in both good and not-so-good ways. I also study health literacy, which you can learn more about on the health literacy page. My work is about finding ways to use communication to improve health.

I have written scientific articles and presented at scientific conferences. I also give talks in the community, including to high school groups interested in public health. And I work with families who have children with disabilities in different ways including as a support broker.

why did i create Get Health'e'?

  • Is it hard to know what online health information to trust?
  • Do you think health insurance terms are confusing?
  • Are you overwhelmed by all of the health news on social media?
  • Have you struggled to figure out how to access services you need?

I would answer yes to these questions, and I have a Ph.D. in public health and study health communication! So, I created Get Health'e'. By combining my personal and work experience, I am developing these resources to help others.

what are my credentials?

I am a Professor at the University at Albany School of Public Health.

Before starting at UAlbany, I was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Annenberg Public Policy Center, University of Pennsylvania. I earned my Ph.D. from the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. I also received a Masters in Public Health from the Boston University School of Public Health, and completed my undergraduate work at Pomona College in California.
