Once children turn 3 they leave the early intervention program. Pre-school programs are funded through Part B, Section 619 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

If your child qualifies they will get what is called an Individualized Education Program (IEP). This is designed to provide a written document of what services and supports the child needs and will receive.

Pre-school special education can occur in a variety of settings. Children may go to a special pre-school designed for children who are getting services. Other times they may go to any pre-school and service providers will visit them there to provide services. Sometimes services can even be provided in the home.
The idea is that they are placed in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). This means they are integrated with the genera student population as much as possible. Read here for more details about different types of placements that may occur for pre-school age children. |
